The Phillies optioned struggling right-hander Brett Myers to class-AAA Lehigh Valley Tuesday.
Pat Gillick said the following in a statement, according to Phillies.com:
"I can't say enough about Brett's willingness to accept this assignment," Gillick said. "He understood and is eager to get back on track again. He's struggling right now, but he is a quality Major League pitcher who we are going to need in the second half of the season."
Gillick added that the organization will "monitor" Myers' progress in the minor leagues. A scheduled date for his return has not been determined.
Myers is 3-9 with a 5.84 ERA in 17 starts. He leads the league in home runs allowed (24) and has surrendered 115 hits in 101 2/3 innings.
While an announcement hasn't been made, it appears the Phillies will replace Myers in the rotation with J.A. Happ, who is among the class-AAA leaders in strikeouts. Or, the Phillies could move Chad Durbin into the rotation.
Either way, somebody needs to fill Myers' 25-man roster spot. As soon as the news breaks, I'll post it here...

I'm sorry you didn't get your wish of an outright release...
Would you say this move makes the Phils big players for one of the top-tier pitching on the trade market?
I honestly think this division will be decided by which one of our teams can best shore up their pitching by the trade deadline.
Brett Myers never lived up to the hype. The guy is a headcase and I don't think he'll ever amount to much. Unless the Phillies make a blockbuster trade, the team really needs him to figure things out. I just don't think that's possible at this point. He's a lost cause.
The Phillies will make offers for C.C. or Bedard, but I truly believe they do not have enough to get a top-tier guy. Teams like Boston, the Yankees, the Mets and even the Rays have a better farm system and more pieces to offer.
The Phillies could attract attention if they are willing to give up their two best prospects (pitcher Carlos Carrasco and second Adrian Cardenas) and a big league player, notably Shane Victorino or Jayson Werth.... but I still don't think that'll be enough to entice the Indians or Mariners.
The division is certainly up for grabs. I imagine the Braves are desperately seeking pitching help at this point?
