For the first time since June 5th, the Mets are above .500 after hanging on by the skin of their teeth for a 10-9 win over NL East leading Philadelphia tonight to move within 2.5 games of first place.
With just six games to go before the break, the Mets have a chance to be in first place at the break if things go their way. However, being in their current position didn't come easy. You're up 10-1 tonight, you're thinking easy win right? It should have been, but it was anything but.
For the second time in two days, Jayson Werth faced Billy Wagner with the game on the line. Yesterday, he sent the game into extra innings. Tonight, he filed out to end the game. Maybe being named to the All-Star game was a curse for Billy. I say that because of the situation that he put himself into the past two nights after being named to the team yesterday.
Last night, Shane Victorino singled to bring up the tying run in Jayson Werth who homered to send the game into extras. The Mets prevailed in 12. Tonight, Werth came up as the winning run after Victorino doubled and Second Baseman Eric Bruntlett walked. As I said before, Werth flied out to end the game.
With the game 10-3 in the Mets favor, First Baseman Ryan Howard hit a controversial 2 run homer to cut the deficit to 10-5 in the 7th inning. It was controversial because of fan interference. It was ruled a homer after the original call was overturned, prompting the ejection of Mets Manager Jerry Manuel.
In the bottom of the 8th, Pitch Hitter Geoff Jenkins hit a 2 run homer to close the gap to 10-7. In the bottom of the 9th, as was said before Shane Victorino doubled, and Eric Bruntlett walked. After getting Ryan Howard to strike out, and Left Fielder Pat Burrell to fly out, Wagner had to face Pitch Hitter Pedro Feliz. Feliz singled to center, and Victorino scored to cut the deficit to 10-8 for the Phils. On the play, Bruntlett moved to third, and then scored on an inexcusable throwing error by Center Fielder Carlos Beltran, to cut the Mets lead to 10-9 and really make Mets fans sweat. That set the stage for the Wagner vs. Werth battle, but tonight Billy won the battle between the two to send the Mets on a happy bus ride back to NY after taking 3 of 4 from the NL East leading (for the moment) Phils.
If they keep this up, I'll be dead before season's end.
