Earlier in the year when Fernando Tatis won a ball game for the Mets in 12 innings against Florida, SNY's Ron Darling called him a "super sub." Well, the "super sub" struck again today for the Mets, this time against the Phillies with a 2 run game winning home run in the top of the 12th to give the Mets a 4-2 win, which pulled them within 3.5 games of the NL East lead.
Carlos Beltran gave the Mets what seemed an insurance run at the time with an RBI single to right center that scored Jose Reyes and gave the Mets a 2-0 lead in the 9th inning. (Beltran drove in the lone run of the game before a 2 hour and 50 minute rain delay, with a solo home run to right in the top of the 3rd.)
However, on the day that Billy Wagner was named to his 6th All-Star team, he gave up the two run lead, and sent the game into extra innings when he gave up a 2 run home run to left center to Jayson Werth to tie the game at two.
That's when Tatis had a chance to shine. Again in extra innings as he did against Florida, and again in the 12th inning. Today, while facing Philadelphia Reliever Chad Durbin, with Carlos Delgado on the bases after walking, Tatis managed to hit a home run to left center, and bail out Wagner who hadn't blown a save since his horrible West Coast trip earlier this year. Joe Smith pitched two and a third scoreless innings to earn the win.
The Mets have won two in a row in a big series against the Phillies with a chance to move closer in the finale Monday night. We'll see what happens.

I figured once Werth hit that improbable home run, the Phillies had all but won the game. To the Mets' credit, they battled back. I think the tide is starting to turn. The Mets are starting to win these close games, as the Phillies did all of last season.
I don't know Matt. As soon as I think they're gonna turn it around, they lose four straight. They've been so inconsistant this year.
